Restorative Yoga

Rest - Relax - Restore

Restorative yoga is a completely different experience than most other styles of yoga and is suitable for practitioners of all levels.

This restful practice is all about slowing down and opening your body through passive stretching. During a restorative class, you may hardly move at all, doing just a few postures over the course of an hour.

Restorative yoga is a practice of deep relaxation that emphasizes the meditative aspect of yoga. Utilizing props including yoga blocks, blankets, and bolsters for support - these postures are held relatively effortlessly for between 5 to 15 minutes.

As the body activates the parasympathetic nervous system and enters a state of deep relaxation, the mind can also relax.  Your focus will be on your breath and becoming aware of sensations or thoughts that appear.

Restorative classes are typically very mellow, making them a great complement to our busy lives. I typically teach this on a Sunday afternoon to help support a good start for the week ahead.

The benefits of restorative yoga include increased relaxation, better sleep, improved well-being, better moods, pain reduction and it gently strengthens connective tissue around our joints.

Yoga is much more than a way of moving the body.

Yoga means union and provides access to the courage in your heart and the wisdom in your bones.

Yoga is a way of getting to know yourself. It's an access point to some powerful truths and bodily autonomy.

Yoga — union — is not love and light and good vibes only. Yoga acknowledges the light AND the dark — the dichotomies of our humanness. The black, white, and innumerable shades of gray.

Our yoga does not allow us to look away from the many, multiplying decimations of human dignity present in the world today. It does not allow us to live above or outside our material world by spiritually bypassing or gaslighting human experiences.

Our yoga asks us for more than love and light and thoughts and prayers. It asks us to check our privilege and witness all of it: Pain and joy. Disgust and awe. Hopelessness and deep reverence. True union asks us to be connected to all of it.

We also believe yoga is about creating safe, accessible spaces — especially for those who have not always been safe and/or been denied access for a variety of reasons.
